Parent and Classroom Volunteer in Portland Public Schools (PPS)
Portland Public School Alumnae,
Three Generations of family worked for PPS and parent to two children at PPS.
Over 20 years of experience in community engagement throughout the region; including public and private service with diverse communities.
Michelle lives in a historic house in Portland’s King neighborhood, within walking distance of the home she was raised in. Her two sons attended Portland Public Schools. She grew up in the Irvington and Eliot neighborhoods, and graduated from Portland Public Schools, attending the Metropolitan Learning Center and Jefferson High School. She volunteers with many community groups, including the Interstate Firehouse Cultural Center, tutoring middle school students in algebra with the Northeast Community Development Corporation, the Community Energy Project, the Native American Chamber of Commerce and with the Oregon Tradeswomen Network.
Michelle earned a Bachelor of Science in Community Development at Portland State with a focus on Housing and Economic Development. Her graduate studies found her at the Bainbridge Graduate Institute where she focused on renewable energy, sustainable development and social justice.
As a professional, Michelle worked 30 years in our community in private, public and non-profit sectors to advance sustainability, advocating for more equitable workplaces, and increasing access to affordable housing. She is currently Community Engagement and Policy Coordinator for the City of Portland Housing Bureau. She managed the MWESB program for the Metro Regional Government; evaluated energy programs for The Cadmus Group and managed construction for the Portland Parks Bureau under Charles Jordan’s leadership.
Michelle is proud of the fact she skied up and over a mountain last year over three days with little complaint, and is a big fan of uphill walks, where she does complain. She is an above average parallel parker, just started to read books again for pleasure, loves to cook, play outdoors, and is terrible at games involving TV trivia.
